Where it comes from

The story of Eamonn

Eadmund was an Anglo-Saxon royal name, carried by a king of East Anglia killed by Danish raiders in the ninth century and venerated as a martyr. His cult reached Ireland, and Irish speakers made Éamonn of the name — one of relatively few English names that Irish took in wholeheartedly. It has been a standard Irish men's name for centuries and reached American records with Irish emigration, in the spellings Eamon, Eamonn and Eammon.

Eamonn sits in the rare tail. Its best year on record was 2007, with 46 boys. Today it is given to few enough children that it does not enter the ranked charts at all.

counting every spelling

The SSA counts spellings, not names. Eamonn went to 36 boys in 2025, but Eamon is the same name said out loud. Together the 2 spellings went to 138, which makes it the 790th most-given boys’ name of the year — 2,450 places above the chart.

About 1 boy in 12,377 born in 2025 was given one of these spellings — against 1 in 47,447 for Eamonn itself.

Spellings are grouped by a fixed rule that folds interchangeable English spellings of one sound (ck/k, ph/f, x/ks, a non-initial y for i) and keeps vowels apart, so Sean and Shawn stay separate names. It errs towards splitting: a family here is never larger than the truth. SSA national data, 2025. Method

The trade-off

Practical strengths
  • A settled Old English meaning and a documented record reaching back over a thousand years.
  • Eddie and Ned are both established short forms with their own histories.
  • It is instantly recognizable as Irish without being unpronounceable.
What to consider
  • Eamon with one n is equally standard, so the spelling will be asked for.
  • American readers see the ea and try EE-mon rather than AY-mun.
  • The accent will be dropped by nearly every American system.
