The story of Drue
Drogo appears in the Domesday Book as a Norman given name and became the English surname Drew as well as a first name. Independently, English speakers clipped Andrew to Drew, and the two became one name with two ancestries. The Drue spelling is an American respelling of the twentieth century and appears in the records alongside Dru and Drew, all of them said identically.

manly, or ghost
Through Andrew the name is Greek, from andros, a man. Separately the Norman Dru or Drogo was a real given name, generally read from a Germanic word for a ghost or apparition, or from a Frankish word for one who carries. Both fed the English Drew.

The Garlin test
Every popular name lives one long story — a climb, a peak, a slow settling back. Drue's later chapters haven't been written yet, so we borrowed them: Garlin climbed just as high around 1939, and its whole arc is on record. Line the two peaks up, and Garlin's path sketches the road Drue is walking now.
Drue sits in the calm middle of the cycle — neither chasing a wave nor sliding off one. Middle-of-the-cycle names age slowly and predictably.

The trade-off
- One syllable and four letters, easy to write and impossible to mispronounce.
- Two documented ancestries, Greek and Norman, both real.
- Andrew stands behind it as a fuller formal option.
- Drew is by far the standard spelling and will be written for him constantly.
- Drue and Dru are both used for girls as well, so forms may guess wrong.
- A one-syllable name gives little room for a nickname.
