The story of Dresden
Dresden was a Sorbian settlement before it was a German one, and its name records that. It became the residence of the Electors of Saxony, the Florence on the Elbe, a center of porcelain and baroque architecture — and, on 13 February 1945, the target of an Allied firebombing that destroyed the old city and killed roughly 25,000 people. That is a heavy thing to carry, and for two generations after the war the word was unusable as a name. Its appearance in American birth records in the 2010s belongs to the wave of place names and -den endings, and the peak in 2012 comes seventy years after the raid, which is about the distance at which a place name stops being a headline.
Meaning
People of the riverside forest
The city's name comes from Old Sorbian Drežďany, from a word for a forest or wood, referring to the settlers of the floodplain forest along the Elbe. The etymology is standard in German place-name scholarship. As a personal name it carries no meaning of its own; it is the place, borrowed.

The Terrick test
Every popular name lives one long story — a climb, a peak, a slow settling back. Dresden's later chapters haven't been written yet, so we borrowed them: Terrick climbed just as high around 1981, and its whole arc is on record. Line the two peaks up, and Terrick's path sketches the road Dresden is walking now.
Dresden sits in the calm middle of the cycle — neither chasing a wave nor sliding off one. Middle-of-the-cycle names age slowly and predictably.
