The story of Doreen
The name appears in English use in the late nineteenth century and was given a substantial push by a popular 1894 novel titled Doreen, set in Ireland. It spread through Britain, Ireland, Australia and America together in the first decades of the twentieth century — one of a group of -een names, alongside Maureen, Kathleen and Noreen, that made the Irish diminutive briefly fashionable in English. American use peaked in the late 1940s.

gift
Read as Dora plus -ín, the meaning comes from Dorothea — the Greek doron, 'gift', and theos, 'god' — with the Irish diminutive adding affection rather than sense. An alternative reading takes it from the Irish Dóirín, a diminutive of a word meaning sullen or brooding, which is a quite different proposition. Neither has displaced the other.

The Faye test
Every popular name lives one long story — a climb, a peak, a slow settling back. Doreen's later chapters haven't been written yet, so we borrowed them: Faye climbed just as high around 1934, and its whole arc is on record. Line the two peaks up, and Faye's path sketches the road Doreen is walking now.
Doreen sits in the calm middle of the cycle — neither chasing a wave nor sliding off one. Middle-of-the-cycle names age slowly and predictably.
