Domenica
Feminine · “of the Lord”
Domenica means Sunday, and in Italian it still does — it is the ordinary word for the day. The name was traditionally given to girls born on it, which makes it a rare thing in European naming: a name that once told you something factual about the child. Its American peak is 1914, with the great Italian arrival.

The story of Domenica
Naming a child for the day of the week or the feast day of their birth was ordinary across Catholic Europe, and Domenica, Domingo, Pasqua and Natale all come from it. Saint Dominic, who founded the Dominican order in 1216, was himself named that way, and his cult made the name much more common. Italian usage kept Domenica in ordinary circulation, particularly in the south, and it came to America with the migration of 1890 to 1920 — which is why the American record peaks in 1914 alongside Vincenza, Concetta and Assunta.
Meaning
of the Lord; Sunday
Latin dominicus means 'belonging to the lord', from dominus, 'master, lord'. The Church called Sunday dies dominica, the Lord's day, and in the Romance languages the adjective became the name of the day: Italian domenica, Spanish domingo, French dimanche. The personal name comes from the same word and was given for the day of birth or of baptism. The derivation is settled at every step.
