The story of Dinah
Genesis 34 concerns Dinah, Jacob's daughter, and the violence done to her and then in her name; the text gives her no words of her own, which readers have found troubling for a very long time. English Protestants took the name after the Reformation and it was well used in America into the twentieth century. Its rabbinic and literary afterlife is substantial and largely concerned with restoring her voice.
Meaning
judged, vindicated
From Hebrew din, to judge; the same root gives Daniel and the word for a rabbinical court. The passive form suggests one who has been judged or for whom judgment has been given.
Pronouncing Dinah
DY-nah
Two syllables, first stressed. Hebrew gives DEE-nah.

Spellings are grouped by a fixed rule that folds interchangeable English spellings of one sound (ck/k, ph/f, x/ks, a non-initial y for i) and keeps vowels apart, so Sean and Shawn stay separate names. It errs towards splitting: a family here is never larger than the truth. SSA national data, 2025. Method

The Verla test
Every popular name lives one long story — a climb, a peak, a slow settling back. Dinah's later chapters haven't been written yet, so we borrowed them: Verla climbed just as high around 1922, and its whole arc is on record. Line the two peaks up, and Verla's path sketches the road Dinah is walking now.
