The story of Dex
Occupational surnames in English preserve trades that vanished centuries ago, and dyeing was one of the great ones, done in workshops that stained a whole street. Dexter and Baxter, a baker, share the same old feminine ending. The surname became a first name in the nineteenth century in America and Britain, helped along by the Latin word's much more flattering meaning, which most bearers assume is the source. Dex as a stand-alone name is recent, part of the general movement of one-syllable clippings into full names.

right-handed, skillful; or a dyer of cloth
Latin dexter, on the right, and so favorable or adroit, gives the classical reading, and English took the word directly in heraldry. The English surname Dexter comes instead from Middle English dexter, a dyer, from an Old English word that was grammatically feminine and named women who dyed cloth. Both fed the modern name.

The Walley test
Every popular name lives one long story — a climb, a peak, a slow settling back. Dex's later chapters haven't been written yet, so we borrowed them: Walley climbed just as high around 1953, and its whole arc is on record. Line the two peaks up, and Walley's path sketches the road Dex is walking now.
Dex sits in the calm middle of the cycle — neither chasing a wave nor sliding off one. Middle-of-the-cycle names age slowly and predictably.
