Dequan
Masculine
Dequan is overwhelmingly a boys’ name — 3,850 boys against 5 girls since 1880.
Dequan joins a prefix with a datable decade to an ending that English could not have produced. De- entered American naming in the 1950s; -quan is a twentieth-century American invention, and it is worth saying why: no English word ends in q followed by a vowel, so the sequence is not borrowed from anywhere.

Our story of Dequan
The -quan ending is one of the clearest cases of genuine invention in American naming, and the evidence is orthographic. English uses qu only before a vowel and only inside a word — quick, require, banquet — and there is no native English word ending in the sound kwahn. So when Dequan, Rashquan, Tyquan and Marquan appear in the 1980s and 1990s, the ending cannot have been borrowed; it was constructed, from the qu that English already had and a vowel English does not put after it. That is a real linguistic event, and it is the kind of thing worth recording. Dequan peaked in 1994, with the De- prefix a generation older than the ending it carries.
Meaningnot established
Not established
Neither element carries meaning. De- is a prefix syllable, historically influenced by French and Spanish de, of, but functioning in American naming as a sound. -quan has no source in any language English draws on: the qu sequence in English is always followed by a vowel inside a word, never at the end, so the ending had to be made. No reading can be given.

The Kraig test
Every popular name lives one long story — a climb, a peak, a slow settling back. Dequan's later chapters haven't been written yet, so we borrowed them: Kraig climbed just as high around 1968, and its whole arc is on record. Line the two peaks up, and Kraig's path sketches the road Dequan is walking now.
Dequan sits in the calm middle of the cycle — neither chasing a wave nor sliding off one. Middle-of-the-cycle names age slowly and predictably.
