The story of Deonna
Comparative linguistics rebuilt one word before it rebuilt any others: a sky-father, reconstructed as Dyeus Pater, whose name survives in Greek Zeus, in Latin Jupiter, which is that phrase worn down, in Sanskrit Dyaus Pita and in the ordinary Latin word deus, a god. Dione is the feminine of the same stem, and in the Iliad she is the mother of Aphrodite, an older figure who was largely displaced by the standard version of the story. The name reached English through Greek and French, and became familiar in America through the singer Dionne Warwick, whose recordings from 1962 onward kept the spelling in front of a very large audience. Deonna is one of the American respellings that followed.
