Dione is a Titan, and in the Iliad she is Aphrodite's mother — which is not the version most people know, since the commoner story has Aphrodite born from sea foam with no mother at all. Her name is simply the feminine of Zeus's, built on the same stem. Deona is an American spelling that lands close to it, though it arrived by a different road entirely.

Where it comes from

The story of Deona

Dione appears in Homer as Aphrodite's mother and at the oracle of Dodona as a consort of Zeus, and her name is one of the oldest recoverable pieces of Greek religion — it is Zeus's own name in a feminine form. Separately, American naming produced a family of women's names ending in -ona in the twentieth century: Ramona, Winona, Leona, Deona. Those two facts sit side by side without touching, and a child called Deona may be carrying either. The name's American record runs from the 1940s onward and is small throughout.

Meaningscholars disagree

of Zeus, divine

The Greek Dione is the feminine form of the stem behind Zeus and the Latin Deus, so it means something like goddess or the divine one. Whether the American Deona descends from it or was built from the De- prefix and an -ona ending cannot be told from the spelling, and the record suggests the second is more likely for most families.

Deona sits in the rare tail. Its best year on record was 1979, with 33 girls. Today it is given to few enough children that it does not enter the ranked charts at all.

counting every spelling

The SSA counts spellings, not names. Deona went to 6 girls in 2025, but Deonna is the same name said out loud. Together the 2 spellings went to 15, which makes it the 945th most-given girls’ name of the year — 12,263 places above the chart.

About 1 girl in 107,151 born in 2025 was given one of these spellings — against 1 in 267,878 for Deona itself.

Spellings are grouped by a fixed rule that folds interchangeable English spellings of one sound (ck/k, ph/f, x/ks, a non-initial y for i) and keeps vowels apart, so Sean and Shawn stay separate names. It errs towards splitting: a family here is never larger than the truth. SSA national data, 2025. Method

The trade-off

Practical strengths
  • Dee and Ona are both usable and belong to different generations.
  • Three open syllables that survive any accent intact.
  • If the Greek reading is the family's, there is a genuinely old figure behind it.
  • It sits well after long or consonant-heavy surnames.
What to consider
  • Deonna, Dionna and Deanna all sit close by and will be written instead.
  • The stress placement is unsettled, so the name arrives two ways.
  • Its meaning cannot be given flatly, since two quite separate readings run into it.
