Avanelle
Feminine · “river”
Avanelle looks like it was built from Ava and a French ending, and it may have been. There is another possibility worth knowing: the river Avon, which runs through England several times over, and whose name is simply the Celtic word for a river — which means every Englishman who says River Avon is saying river river, in two languages, without noticing.

The story of Avanelle
Names ending in -elle and -nelle appeared in American records in large numbers around 1900, attached to almost any front element — Avanelle, Lavonelle, Ardelle, Wanelle. Most of them were made rather than inherited, and most did not last more than a generation or two. What makes this one worth pausing over is the front: Avon and Avona were both in use as names at the same period, carried by the river's literary associations, and either could be the source. The name belongs firmly to the early twentieth century and has been very rare ever since.

river, if the front is read as Avon
Two readings, neither established. Avon comes from the Brittonic abona, a river, and the word survives in Welsh as afon; there are at least four rivers called Avon in England, all of them named by people telling incomers what the water was. The other reading takes the name as Ava, itself of unclear origin, joined to the -elle ending American naming used freely at the turn of the twentieth century.

- Three syllables of soft consonants sit well after most surnames.
- Avonelle, Avenelle and Avanel all appear in records, so the spelling has to be dictated.
- It belongs unmistakably to the early twentieth century and carries that flavor.
