The story of Demetria
Demeter's cult at Eleusis was among the most important in the Greek world, and the personal names built on hers were correspondingly common. Christianity did not discard them: Saint Demetrius of Thessalonica, a soldier-martyr, became one of the great warrior saints of the Eastern church, which carried Dimitri and Demetrios into Greek, Russian, Serbian and Bulgarian use permanently. The feminine Demetria has been used in Greece, Italy and Spain. Its American peak in 1974 belongs to a distinct movement — the same years in which African American families took up classical and Greek names in numbers, giving Demetria, Demetrius, Cassandra and Athena a decade of visibility they had not had before.
Meaning
Of Demeter, devoted to Demeter
From Greek Dēmētrios, belonging to Demeter, the goddess of the grain and the harvest. Demeter's own name is usually read as earth mother, from mētēr, mother, and a first element connected to a word for earth, though that first element is not securely established. The derivation of the personal name from the goddess is not in dispute.

The Francisca test
Every popular name lives one long story — a climb, a peak, a slow settling back. Demetria's later chapters haven't been written yet, so we borrowed them: Francisca climbed just as high around 1902, and its whole arc is on record. Line the two peaks up, and Francisca's path sketches the road Demetria is walking now.
Demetria sits in the calm middle of the cycle — neither chasing a wave nor sliding off one. Middle-of-the-cycle names age slowly and predictably.
