Demarius
Masculine · “possibly 'of Mars”
Demarius attaches a modern American prefix to a genuine Roman name. Marius was one of the old Roman family names, borne by the general who reorganised the Roman army and held the consulship seven times; the -ius ending is Latin and unmistakable. Put De- in front and you have a name that is half classical and half contemporary. Its peak is 1991.

The story of Demarius
Gaius Marius, consul seven times and the general who opened the Roman legions to landless citizens, made the family name famous; a later Saint Marius kept it in Christian use, and it survives in Italian as Mario and in French as Marius, which is particularly associated with Provence. The American De- prefix has a separate history, coming from French and Louisiana Creole surnames where de- means 'of', and detaching in the mid-twentieth century to become a free-standing name element. Demarius, Demarcus and Demario all join it to genuinely Latin second halves, which is a slightly unusual pattern: most De- names take invented endings instead.
Meaningscholars disagree
possibly 'of Mars', in the Marius element
Marius is a Roman gens name and its meaning is not settled. The most cited proposal connects it to Mars, the god, which would make it a theophoric name of the ordinary Roman kind. Others derive it from mas, 'male', or treat it as Etruscan and therefore unrecoverable, which is the fate of a good many Roman family names. The De- prefix is American and carries no lexical content in this position, so the meaning question rests entirely on the second half.

Spellings are grouped by a fixed rule that folds interchangeable English spellings of one sound (ck/k, ph/f, x/ks, a non-initial y for i) and keeps vowels apart, so Sean and Shawn stay separate names. It errs towards splitting: a family here is never larger than the truth. SSA national data, 2025. Method

The Aram test
Every popular name lives one long story — a climb, a peak, a slow settling back. Demarius's later chapters haven't been written yet, so we borrowed them: Aram climbed just as high around 1922, and its whole arc is on record. Line the two peaks up, and Aram's path sketches the road Demarius is walking now.
Demarius sits in the calm middle of the cycle — neither chasing a wave nor sliding off one. Middle-of-the-cycle names age slowly and predictably.

The trade-off
- Half the name is a documented Roman family name with a famous bearer.
- Mario and Dee are both usable short forms with quite different characters.
- The -ius ending gives it a distinctly classical sound uncommon among modern coinages.
- The prefix has no meaning, so the answer to the meaning question is only half an answer.
- Demarius, Demario and Demarcus all circulate and are easily confused.
- The Roman name itself has no settled etymology.
