Delaney is a decapitated O'Delaney. Irish surnames carry a prefix, O for a descendant and Mac for a son, and English administration stripped most of them off; the families that got their O back in the nineteenth century are the exception, not the rule.

The story of Delaney
Under the penal laws and the general pressure of English administration, Irish families dropped the O and Mac prefixes in enormous numbers during the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries, so that O Dubhshlaine became Delany and Mac Gabhann became Smith. A deliberate movement in the nineteenth century restored the prefixes to some names but not others, which is why O'Brien and O'Connor kept theirs while Delaney, Doyle and Kelly did not. All three are equally Irish. Delaney reached America as a surname, became a boy's given name in the twentieth century with a best year of 1973, and then crossed to girls in far larger numbers in the 1990s.
Meaning
descendant of Dubhshlaine, dark one of the Slaney
The Irish surname is O Dubhshlaine, combining dubh, black or dark, with Slaine, the river Slaney in Leinster. The O prefix means grandson or descendant and is a full part of the name in Irish; its loss in English is an administrative accident. The alternative reading of the second element as a word for challenger is the weaker of the two.

Every popular name lives one long story — a climb, a peak, a slow settling back. Delaney's later chapters haven't been written yet, so we borrowed them: Socrates climbed just as high around 1931, and its whole arc is on record. Line the two peaks up, and Socrates's path sketches the road Delaney is walking now.
Delaney sits in the calm middle of the cycle — neither chasing a wave nor sliding off one. Middle-of-the-cycle names age slowly and predictably.
