Damen
Masculine · “to tame”
Damen sits between two ancient names and belongs cleanly to neither. Damon is Greek and means to tame; Damian comes from the same root and belongs to a pair of physician saints. Damen is the American spelling that splits the difference, and its peak is 1978, in the middle of the decade when the -en ending was taking over American boys' names.

The story of Damen
The Damon and Pythias story was one of the standard examples of friendship in European education for two thousand years, which kept the name alive in literary use long before it was common. Damian had a separate life through the physician saints and was strong in Catholic Europe. Both entered American use in the twentieth century, and Damon rose sharply in the 1960s and 1970s. Damen belongs to that moment and to a wider pattern: from about 1970 American boys' names increasingly ended in -en, -an or -on, and existing names were respelled to fit — Jaden, Kaden, Damen, Camden. Chicago's Damen Avenue, named for a nineteenth-century Jesuit, carries the same spelling from an unrelated source.
Meaningscholars disagree
to tame, to subdue
Greek damazo means to tame or subdue, and it gives both Damon and Damianos. Damon is the better-known: in the story told by Cicero and others, Damon and Pythias are the friends who each offer to die for the other. Damian belongs to Saints Cosmas and Damian, physicians martyred in the fourth century. Whether Damen descends from either or is simply a modern respelling cannot be determined, which is why the reading is offered with a qualification rather than flatly.

The Cleophus test
Every popular name lives one long story — a climb, a peak, a slow settling back. Damen's later chapters haven't been written yet, so we borrowed them: Cleophus climbed just as high around 1945, and its whole arc is on record. Line the two peaks up, and Cleophus's path sketches the road Damen is walking now.
Damen sits in the calm middle of the cycle — neither chasing a wave nor sliding off one. Middle-of-the-cycle names age slowly and predictably.

The trade-off
- The pronunciation is obvious on sight, which not every respelling manages.
- Damon and Damian are both available as more traditional alternatives.
- The -en ending places it comfortably in current American naming without being invented.
- Damon, Damen and Daymon all circulate and are constantly confused.
- Whether it descends from Damon or Damian is not determinable, so the meaning needs a qualifier.
- The spelling dates the name to the 1970s and after.
