Our story of Dajuan
The Da- names are one of the best-documented naming inventions in American English, and they behave like a grammar rather than a list. A prefix — Da-, De-, La-, Ja-, Ta- — attaches to an existing name or sound, and the result is new but instantly legible to anyone who knows the pattern: Dashawn from Shawn, Damarcus from Marcus, Dajuan from Juan. Linguists studying African American naming in the 1970s and 1980s found the system already fully formed and highly productive, generating names that had never existed before and were nevertheless correctly recognized as names on sight. Dajuan's American peak in 2001 coincides with the schoolboy and college fame of DaJuan Wagner, and belongs to the mature phase of that system rather than to any Spanish inheritance.

The John element means God is gracious
Juan descends through Spanish from Latin Ioannes and Hebrew Yôḥānān, God is gracious, and that reading is settled for Juan itself. Da- is a different matter: it is a productive American prefix, seen in Dashawn, Damarcus, Daquan and dozens more, and no source establishes a meaning for it. Reading Dajuan as a compound with a translatable sense is not supported; the honest statement is that half the name is Spanish and the whole of it is American.

The Thanh test
Every popular name lives one long story — a climb, a peak, a slow settling back. Dajuan's later chapters haven't been written yet, so we borrowed them: Thanh climbed just as high around 1982, and its whole arc is on record. Line the two peaks up, and Thanh's path sketches the road Dajuan is walking now.
Dajuan sits in the calm middle of the cycle — neither chasing a wave nor sliding off one. Middle-of-the-cycle names age slowly and predictably.

The trade-off
- The pattern is legible: anyone who knows American naming reads it correctly as a name.
- It has a real Spanish element with a settled meaning behind half of it.
- It shortens cleanly to DJ or to Juan.
- The capitalization varies — Dajuan, DaJuan, Da'Juan, D'Juan — and all four are in the records.
- The Da- pattern is strongly dated to the last third of the twentieth century.
- The name has no etymology of its own to explain to a child.
