Chantelle
Feminine
Chantelle is overwhelmingly a girls’ name — 6,682 girls against 8 boys since 1880.
Chantelle looks like it means song, and it does not. Chantal, its parent, comes from a place in Burgundy whose name derives from an Occitan word for stone — cantal, a boulder. The connection to French chanter, to sing, is a folk etymology that has been repeated so often it now shapes how the name is used.

The story of Chantelle
Jeanne-Françoise Frémyot, Baroness de Chantal, was canonized in 1767, and French Catholic families began using her territorial title as a given name in the twentieth century. Chantal became fashionable in France in the 1940s and 1950s, and crossed to English-speaking countries afterward. Chantelle is the English respelling, adding the -elle ending that English associates with French women's names — Michelle, Danielle, Rochelle. Its 1989 American peak sits alongside all three of those.

From an Occitan word for stone or boulder
Chantal is a French surname from the place Chantal in Saône-et-Loire, generally derived from Occitan cantal, a stone or boulder. Saint Jeanne de Chantal, who founded the Visitation order in 1610, made it a devotional name. The widely repeated derivation from chanter, to sing, is not supported by the place-name evidence — but it is now the reading most speakers have in mind, which is worth stating rather than hiding.

The Margarett test
Every popular name lives one long story — a climb, a peak, a slow settling back. Chantelle's later chapters haven't been written yet, so we borrowed them: Margarett climbed just as high around 1932, and its whole arc is on record. Line the two peaks up, and Margarett's path sketches the road Chantelle is walking now.
