Serenus in Latin was said of weather. The word means clear, bright, cloudless — a serene sky before it was a serene person — and the transfer from the air to the temperament happened early enough that both senses were current in Rome. Cerena writes that name with a c, which English reads as an s before an e and which changes nothing at all.

Where it comes from

The story of Cerena

Serena was a late Roman name and a Christian one; it was also the name of the wife of the general Stilicho, a figure of real consequence at the end of the Western empire. It stayed in Italian use and reached English through the Renaissance — Spenser gives it to a character in The Faerie Queene. American use grew through the twentieth century. The c-spelling belongs to the ordinary business of respelling a familiar name, and it appears in the record from 1915 with a much later peak in 2000.

Meaning

clear, calm, untroubled

From the Latin serenus, used first of weather — a clear sky, a day without cloud — and then of a mind or a face. The English serene carries both senses still. Serena is the feminine, and it was borne by an early Christian woman venerated in Rome.

Pronouncing Cerena

seh-REE-nah

Three syllables, stress in the middle. The c is said as an s because it comes before an e, which is an English and Latin rule alike — so the spelling changes the look and nothing else.

counting every spelling

The SSA counts spellings, not names. Cerena went to 5 girls in 2025, but Serena and Serenna are the same name said out loud. Together the 3 spellings went to 953, which makes it the 327th most-given girls’ name of the year — 14,615 places above the chart.

About 1 girl in 1,687 born in 2025 was given one of these spellings — against 1 in 321,453 for Cerena itself.

Spellings are grouped by a fixed rule that folds interchangeable English spellings of one sound (ck/k, ph/f, x/ks, a non-initial y for i) and keeps vowels apart, so Sean and Shawn stay separate names. It errs towards splitting: a family here is never larger than the truth. SSA national data, 2025. Method

The trade-off

Practical strengths
  • The meaning is one word, entirely positive, and has a good story about weather behind it.
  • Rena is available as a short form and is a standing name in several languages.
  • Three open syllables that survive any accent intact.
  • The Latin name behind it is documented and has real late-Roman history.
What to consider
  • Serena is the standard spelling and will be written instead on nearly everything.
  • The change is inaudible, so the letters have to be dictated.
  • Cerena, Sarena and Serina all appear, which multiplies the confusion.
