Where it comes from

The story of Celie

Roman gentilicial names came from a wide range of sources and two families with similar-sounding names could have entirely different origins. Caelius and Caecilius are a good example: the first is a well attested plebeian family, its name generally taken from caelum or from the Caelian Hill, and the second is one of the older plebeian houses, its name from a word for blindness. In English both produced names, Celia through Shakespeare's As You Like It and through Italian usage, and Cecilia through the saint. Because Celia looks like a shortening of Cecilia, the two have been treated as one for centuries, and a woman called Celia will regularly be asked whether it is short for something. It is not. The 1880 peak places Celie among the great mass of nineteenth-century American diminutives registered as full names.

Latin Caelia, from caelum, sky

Celie is a short form of Celia or Cecilia. Celia derives from the Roman family name Caelius, generally connected to caelum, the sky or heaven. Cecilia derives from Caecilius, from caecus, blind. The two are unrelated and have merged in English usage, so which lies behind a given bearer is not recoverable. It peaks in the American data in 1880.
