Carlita
Feminine · “little Carla”
Spanish has two endings for making a name smaller and it uses both freely. Carlita and Carlina do exactly the same job to the same base — one with a t and one with an n — and which a family reaches for is regional and personal rather than rule-bound. The base is Carlos, which is the Spanish Charles and has been the name of Spanish kings.

The story of Carlita
Carlos came to Spain with the Habsburgs and became one of the standard royal names — several kings carried it, including the one who was simultaneously Holy Roman Emperor and ruled an empire on which the sun famously did not set. The feminine Carla followed, and the diminutives after that. Carlita appears in American records from 1914 and peaked in 1953, arriving through Spanish-speaking families and, in some cases, through American parents who liked the Latin shape without any Spanish connection at all.
Meaning
little Carla; a free man's daughter
From Carla, the Spanish and Italian feminine of Carlos and Carlo, with the -ita diminutive ending. Behind it is the Germanic karl, a free man of no particular rank. The ending adds affection rather than sense, and in Spanish it very often produces a name given at birth rather than used only at home.

The Bettyjo test
Every popular name lives one long story — a climb, a peak, a slow settling back. Carlita's later chapters haven't been written yet, so we borrowed them: Bettyjo climbed just as high around 1925, and its whole arc is on record. Line the two peaks up, and Bettyjo's path sketches the road Carlita is walking now.
Carlita sits in the calm middle of the cycle — neither chasing a wave nor sliding off one. Middle-of-the-cycle names age slowly and predictably.
