Carlie
Feminine · “Free man”
Carlie is given to both — 15,019 girls and 1,292 boys since 1880. See Carlie as a boy nameSee other names given to both
Carlie is a man's name with a pet ending on it, and that is the whole of the change. English has no suffix of its own for turning a man's name into a woman's, so it does the job with the ending it uses on children instead, and Carlie, Charlie, Frankie and Bobbie are all made the same way.

The story of Carlie
Charles has one legacy that almost nobody attributes to it, and it is the alphabet in front of you. The scholars gathered at Charlemagne's court set out to standardize the writing of Latin across the empire and produced a clear, rounded, separated script now called Carolingian minuscule, with word spaces and recognizable small letters. Renaissance printers, looking for a script that seemed properly ancient, took that one as their model, and it became the lower case of every roman typeface since. The name of the emperor is attached to it. Carl is the older shape of the same name, kept in German and Scandinavian use, and the American Carlie descends from that side rather than from the French one.
Meaning
Free man
The Germanic word behind Carl and Charles described a man who was free but held no rank, which in an aristocratic society was a real and useful category. The pet ending adds no meaning; it is a signal of familiarity, and in American use it has come to signal that the bearer is a girl, though nothing in the ending itself says so.

About 1 girl in 10,715 born in 2025 was given one of these spellings — against 1 in 24,727 for Carlie itself.
Spellings are grouped by a fixed rule that folds interchangeable English spellings of one sound (ck/k, ph/f, x/ks, a non-initial y for i) and keeps vowels apart, so Sean and Shawn stay separate names. It errs towards splitting: a family here is never larger than the truth. SSA national data, 2025. Method

The Joelle test
Every popular name lives one long story — a climb, a peak, a slow settling back. Carlie's later chapters haven't been written yet, so we borrowed them: Joelle climbed just as high around 1966, and its whole arc is on record. Line the two peaks up, and Joelle's path sketches the road Carlie is walking now.

The trade-off
- Short, warm and impossible to mispronounce, with nothing in it a small child will struggle with.
- It works for a child of either sex, and the record shows it has been used both ways.
- Carl sits inside it as a plain, formal, one-syllable name available later.
- Four spellings of this sound are in wide use, so expect to spell it out on every form.
- The record carries it for boys and girls both, which means it signals nothing on paperwork.
- A pet ending on a certificate leaves no formal version underneath unless one is written there too.
