The story of Henrietta
French formed Henriette from Henri, and it came to England in 1625 with Henrietta Maria, the French queen of Charles I — which is how Maryland's Henrietta connections and a great many English Henriettas arrived. The Latinized -a form became the English standard. American use rose through the nineteenth century and peaked around 1880.
Meaning
home-ruler
Through Henry, from the Germanic haim, 'home' or 'estate', and ric, 'ruler' or 'power'. The compound describes authority over a household or a domain rather than a kingdom, which is what most Germanic ric names actually meant.
