Where it comes from

Our story of Mahogany

Our story of Mahogany is a story of a word with no traceable parent. It appears in English in the 1670s for a Caribbean hardwood that became the furniture timber of the eighteenth century — Chippendale worked in it — and where the word came from has never been settled. A Yoruba source and an unnamed Caribbean language are both proposed. Mahogany entered American given-name use in the 1970s, and both facts are honest.

Meaningnot established

Not established

The word's origin is genuinely unrecovered. It appears in English from the 1670s for the Caribbean timber; proposals include a Yoruba word, an unidentified Caribbean language and a Spanish route. None is established. Honest sources record the origin as unknown.

About 1 girl in 22,017 born in 2025 was given one of these spellings — against 1 in 24,727 for Mahogany itself.

Spellings are grouped by a fixed rule that folds interchangeable English spellings of one sound (ck/k, ph/f, x/ks, a non-initial y for i) and keeps vowels apart, so Sean and Shawn stay separate names. It errs towards splitting: a family here is never larger than the truth. SSA national data, 2025. Method

The trade-off

Practical strengths
  • That the word's origin is genuinely unrecovered is a first-rate fact.
  • That Chippendale worked in the timber is a good association.
  • Four syllables of open vowels, which carries unusually well.
What to consider
  • The meaning is genuinely unrecovered.
  • It is an ordinary English noun for a timber.
  • Four syllables make it long for everyday use.
