Joelle is a French answer to a Hebrew problem. Joel is a complete sentence disguised as a name — the divine name twice over, in two forms, saying that one is the other — and Hebrew gave it no feminine. French made one the way it makes them all, by adding a syllable and letting the stress fall on it. The result is soft where the original is blunt.

Where it comes from

The story of Joelle

Joel is one of the twelve minor prophets of the Hebrew Bible, the author of a short and vivid book about locusts and restoration. The name reached Europe with the scriptures and stayed male everywhere for centuries. French, which has built feminines by adding -elle for as long as it has had names, produced Joëlle from it, along with Danielle, Gabrielle, Emmanuelle and Raphaëlle — a whole set of women's names made from Hebrew men's names ending in the same divine syllable. That family arrived in American use together in the middle of the twentieth century, and Joëlle came with them, shedding its dieresis at the border.

Meaning

the Lord is God

Hebrew Yo'el places two forms of the divine name side by side: Yo, the short form, and El, the older and wider Semitic word for God. Read plainly it is a statement rather than a description, and it is the sort of name given as a declaration in a time when other gods were on offer.

Pronouncing Joelle

jo-ELL

Two syllables with the weight at the back, following the French. Americans often flatten it to JO-ell, and a few say jo-EL-uh. The dieresis in the French spelling exists to stop the o and the e from merging; without it, the name has to be learned by ear.

The trade-off

Practical strengths
  • The short forms are excellent and varied — one plain, one modern, one affectionate.
  • It is recognizable in French and in English, and the spelling works in both without change.
  • Two syllables, all soft consonants, and no sound that any English speaker finds difficult.
  • The name it is built from is one of the oldest documented in the Hebrew scriptures.
What to consider
  • The stress placement is not settled in American use, so the name is said two ways.
  • It sits beside Joel, and people who see it written quickly will read the man's name instead.
  • The French spelling with the dieresis is the correct one abroad and will look like a different name to relatives who use it.
  • Nearly every child given this spelling is a girl, so a boy named Joelle would be very much the exception on any roster.
