Where it comes from

The story of Candy

Candace entered European naming through a passage in Acts and was used sparingly in English from the seventeenth century, rising sharply in twentieth-century America. Its short form Candy went onto certificates in its own right from the 1940s — helped, unmistakably, by the fact that it was also an ordinary and appealing English word — and it peaked in the mid-1960s.

Meaningscholars disagree

queen mother; crystallized sugar

Read as short for Candace or Candice, the meaning is the Meroitic kandake, the title of the queen mothers of Kush, which classical writers mistook for a personal name. Read as the English word, candy comes through Arabic and Persian from the Sanskrit khanda, 'a piece' — a piece of crystallized sugar. Both were in American use.

The SSA counts spellings, not names. Candy went to 30 girls in 2025, but Kandy is the same name said out loud. Together the 2 spellings went to 36, which makes it the 924th most-given girls’ name of the year — 3,622 places above the chart.

About 1 girl in 44,646 born in 2025 was given one of these spellings — against 1 in 53,576 for Candy itself.

Spellings are grouped by a fixed rule that folds interchangeable English spellings of one sound (ck/k, ph/f, x/ks, a non-initial y for i) and keeps vowels apart, so Sean and Shawn stay separate names. It errs towards splitting: a family here is never larger than the truth. SSA national data, 2025. Method

The trade-off

  • Candace behind it reaches back to an African kingdom and a documented line of ruling women.
  • Warm and immediately familiar, with nothing to explain at introduction.
  • Candace and Candice are both available as formal forms.
What to consider
  • It is an ordinary English word for confectionery, which is the first association for most people.
  • The name carries associations some families would rather avoid.
  • It is closely dated to the 1960s and 1970s.
