Candy traveled about as far as a word can. It starts as the Sanskrit khanda, a piece of something — specifically a lump of crystallized sugar — passes into Persian and Arabic, reaches Europe with the sugar trade, and ends up in English. Kandy with a k is also, quite separately, the last royal capital of Sri Lanka, where the tooth of the Buddha is kept.

Where it comes from

The story of Kandy

Candy became an American women's name in the middle of the twentieth century, part of the same movement that gave Bambi, Cookie and Ginger their moment — short, sweet, deliberately informal names that were given as full names rather than nicknames. The k-spelling arrived alongside it and does what k-spellings usually do: it marks the name as a choice. There is also a city called Kandy in the central highlands of Sri Lanka, the seat of the last Sinhalese kingdom, whose name is unrelated to the confection and comes from a Sinhala word for a hill country.

Meaning

crystallized sugar

From the Sanskrit khanda, a piece or fragment, used for a lump of sugar, through the Persian qand and the Arabic qandi, and into medieval Latin and French. The word arrived in Europe with the thing itself, which is the usual pattern for names of foods.

Kandy sits in the rare tail. Its best year on record was 1961, with 190 girls. Today it is given to few enough children that it does not enter the ranked charts at all.

counting every spelling

The SSA counts spellings, not names. Kandy went to 6 girls in 2025, but Candy is the same name said out loud. Together the 2 spellings went to 36, which makes it the 924th most-given girls’ name of the year — 12,284 places above the chart.

About 1 girl in 44,646 born in 2025 was given one of these spellings — against 1 in 267,878 for Kandy itself.

Spellings are grouped by a fixed rule that folds interchangeable English spellings of one sound (ck/k, ph/f, x/ks, a non-initial y for i) and keeps vowels apart, so Sean and Shawn stay separate names. It errs towards splitting: a family here is never larger than the truth. SSA national data, 2025. Method

The trade-off

Practical strengths
  • Everyone can say it and spell it after hearing it once.
  • The word has a genuinely long journey behind it, across four languages and a continent.
  • Two syllables that sit well before almost any surname.
  • It is recorded for boys as well as girls, though nearly all are girls.
What to consider
  • It is an ordinary English noun for a sweet, and the associations that come with that are not all flattering in adult life.
  • Candy is the commoner spelling and will be written instead.
  • It belongs precisely to one mid-century American generation.
