Camora is a made name, and the interesting decision in it is the first letter. The same sound can be written with a C or a K, and American naming treats that choice as meaningful: the C reads as softer and more traditional, the K as sharper and more modern. Camora takes the C, which places it differently from its own close relatives. Its peak is 2008.

How old is the name Camora?

Camora first appears in US birth records in 2005 — 20 years ago. The typical Camora is a kid of about 11 — this name's wave is very recent. About 600 people named Camora are estimated to be alive in the US today.

When was the name Camora most popular?

Camora peaked in 2008, reaching #3120 nationally. Today it ranks #5917, 2,797 places below that high. See the whole 2008 chart.

Where it comes from

Our story of Camora

C and K carry different signals in American naming and the difference is remarkably consistent. C is the inherited letter — it is what Latin used and what English spelling has always preferred — so a name spelled with a C reads as belonging to the existing stock even when it does not. K is the marked choice. It entered English naming heavily in the twentieth century through Scandinavian, German and Greek names, and by the 1970s it had become the standard way to signal that a name was a modern one, chosen rather than inherited. So Kamora and Camora are the same sound with opposite claims: one announces itself as new, the other quietly declines to. Neither is more correct, and the record shows both being chosen in the same decade by families making, in every other respect, the same decision. The letter is doing all the work.

Meaningnot established

Not established

No documented source. The name has no dictionary entry in any language and the glosses circulated online are unattributable. What can be described is the construction: a Ca- front, one of the productive first elements of late-twentieth-century American naming, and an -ora ending borrowed by sound from the Latin-derived names Aurora, Flora and Leonora. Camorra, with two r's, is the name of the Neapolitan criminal organization and is unrelated in every respect.

Camora sits in the rare tail. Its best year on record was 2008, with 54 girls. Today it is given to few enough children that it does not enter the ranked charts at all.

Rank is a position, a count is a headcount, and they move independently — a name can hold its rank while the number of babies behind it falls. Source: U.S. Social Security Administration.

counting every spelling

The SSA counts spellings, not names. Camora went to 20 girls in 2025, but Kamora, Kamorah and Khamora are the same name said out loud. Together the 4 spellings went to 266, which makes it the 699th most-given girls’ name of the year — 5,218 places above the chart.

About 1 girl in 6,042 born in 2025 was given one of these spellings — against 1 in 80,363 for Camora itself.

Spellings are grouped by a fixed rule that folds interchangeable English spellings of one sound (ck/k, ph/f, x/ks, a non-initial y for i) and keeps vowels apart, so Sean and Shawn stay separate names. It errs towards splitting: a family here is never larger than the truth. SSA national data, 2025. Method

The trade-off

Practical strengths
  • Cam and Cora are both usable short forms already in independent use.
  • The -ora ending gives a modern name a genuinely traditional sound.
  • It is rare enough that a bearer will almost certainly not share it.
What to consider
  • Camora and Kamora are the same name and hers will be written the other way.
  • There is no documented meaning to give when asked.
  • Two stress patterns circulate and the spelling does not settle which.
