Where it comes from

The story of Calissa

Callisto was a companion of Artemis who was seduced by Zeus and transformed into a bear, in some versions by Hera and in others by Artemis. Zeus placed her among the stars as Ursa Major, and her son Arcas became Ursa Minor. The name kallistē was also a cult title of Artemis herself, and there was a shrine of Artemis Kalliste in Athens near Callisto's supposed tomb, which suggests the story may be a rationalisation of the goddess's own epithet. Galileo named Jupiter's moons after Zeus's lovers, Callisto among them, in 1610. The American given name Calissa peaks in 1999.

Greek "most beautiful"

Calissa is generally taken as a form of Calista or Callista, from Greek kallistē, the superlative feminine of kalos, beautiful. It may alternatively be a modern American formation on Ca- with the -lissa ending drawn from Melissa. The two readings are not distinguishable in the record, and only the first supplies a meaning.

The SSA counts spellings, not names. Calissa went to 13 girls in 2025, but Kalissa and Kalyssa are the same name said out loud. Together the 3 spellings went to 34, which makes it the 926th most-given girls’ name of the year — 6,959 places above the chart.

About 1 girl in 47,273 born in 2025 was given one of these spellings — against 1 in 123,636 for Calissa itself.

Spellings are grouped by a fixed rule that folds interchangeable English spellings of one sound (ck/k, ph/f, x/ks, a non-initial y for i) and keeps vowels apart, so Sean and Shawn stay separate names. It errs towards splitting: a family here is never larger than the truth. SSA national data, 2025. Method
