The story of Caidence
The cadere family is one of the largest in English and its members are not obviously related. Chance is from cadentia by way of French cheance, and it means what falls: a throw of dice. Case, in the sense of a situation, is from casus, a falling, and the grammatical sense of case is a translation of a Greek term that also means falling, since the oblique cases were thought of as falling away from the nominative. Accident is what falls upon someone, incident what falls in, coincidence what falls together. Decadence is falling away. Cadaver is a fallen one. Occident, the west, is where the sun falls. Deciduous trees are the ones whose leaves fall. All of these come from a single Latin verb, and English acquired them at different dates through different routes, which is why nobody hears the connection.
Meaning
Latin cadere, to fall
From Latin cadentia, a falling, from cadere, to fall, through Italian cadenza and French cadence. The word first named the fall of the voice at the end of a phrase and was extended to rhythm generally. The same root gives chance, case, accident, incident, decadence, cadaver and coincidence. Caidence is a modern American respelling; it peaks in 2014.

About 1 girl in 6,455 born in 2025 was given one of these spellings — against 1 in 146,115 for Caidence itself.
Spellings are grouped by a fixed rule that folds interchangeable English spellings of one sound (ck/k, ph/f, x/ks, a non-initial y for i) and keeps vowels apart, so Sean and Shawn stay separate names. It errs towards splitting: a family here is never larger than the truth. SSA national data, 2025. Method
