Kaitlyn, Jaelyn, Brooklyn, Ashlyn, Madilyn, Caelyn. What makes Caelyn interesting is the opening it chose. Cael is real Irish and carries a real meaning, and the Irish revival in American naming — Declan, Finnegan, Nolan, Rowan — was running hard in the years Caelyn appeared. So the name reads as though it came from Ireland, and it did not: it came from an American workshop that had an Irish syllable on the shelf. Its 2012 peak sits at the height of both fashions.

Irish caol, slender, gives Caol, Caolán and the surname Ó Caoláin, and the Cael- spelling is a recognized anglicization of it. The -lyn ending is a twentieth-century American suffix, drawn from Lynn and attached productively to Kay-, Jae-, Bri-, Ash- and dozens of other openings. Caelyn as a whole is not recorded in Irish sources and no source establishes it as an Irish name.
