The story of Britany
The Britons who left the island as Germanic settlement advanced took their language and their name across the Channel, which is why Breton is a Celtic language spoken in France. Brittany kept a distinct identity until the sixteenth century and a distinct language much longer. As an English girls' name it appears in the 1960s and then rises with extraordinary speed: by 1989 Brittany was in the American top ten. Names climbing that fast fragment, and Britany, Britney, Brittani, Brittney and Britni all appear in the same years. Britany peaked in 1989, the same year as the parent name.
Meaning
Of the Britons
From French Bretagne, Latin Britannia — the northwestern peninsula of France settled by Britons crossing from Cornwall and Devon between the fifth and seventh centuries. Britannia's own origin is the tribal name recorded by Greek and Roman writers, whose meaning is not established. As a girls' given name the word carries no meaning beyond the place; the single-t spelling is American and adds nothing.

Spellings are grouped by a fixed rule that folds interchangeable English spellings of one sound (ck/k, ph/f, x/ks, a non-initial y for i) and keeps vowels apart, so Sean and Shawn stay separate names. It errs towards splitting: a family here is never larger than the truth. SSA national data, 2025. Method

The Luz test
Every popular name lives one long story — a climb, a peak, a slow settling back. Britany's later chapters haven't been written yet, so we borrowed them: Luz climbed just as high around 1972, and its whole arc is on record. Line the two peaks up, and Luz's path sketches the road Britany is walking now.
