The island was named by the people on it, and what they called themselves probably meant the painted ones. A Greek navigator sailed up from Marseille around 325 BC, wrote down what he heard, and the word has been in the record ever since — one of the oldest place names in northern Europe still in use.

The story of Britain
Pytheas of Massalia sailed north around 325 BC and wrote a book about it that everyone in the ancient world quoted and nobody kept, so we have his account only through the people who doubted it. He described the islands as the Pretannic ones, which is the word the Celtic-speaking inhabitants used, and the name has run unbroken from there through Latin Britannia to modern Britain. As a given name it is much younger and entirely American, part of a set of place names given to children — Britain, London, Ireland, Dakota, Georgia — that has grown steadily since the 1970s and that other English-speaking countries have not taken up.

the painted people
From Latin Britannia, from Greek Prettanike, from a Celtic word the inhabitants used for themselves, Pritani. The usual reading connects it with a root for figured or painted, describing tattooing or body paint, and the same idea stands behind the Latin name for the Picts. It is the best-supported account and not the only one.

The Taro test
Every popular name lives one long story — a climb, a peak, a slow settling back. Britain's later chapters haven't been written yet, so we borrowed them: Taro climbed just as high around 1919, and its whole arc is on record. Line the two peaks up, and Taro's path sketches the road Britain is walking now.
Britain sits in the calm middle of the cycle — neither chasing a wave nor sliding off one. Middle-of-the-cycle names age slowly and predictably.

The trade-off
- One of the oldest recorded place names in Europe, with a documented first mention.
- Two syllables that everyone can already say and spell.
- It serves either child, and the record shows both.
- It is the name of a country, and that association is fixed and not yours to shape.
- Britton and Briton are both in use and one of them is an ordinary English noun.
- It leans to boys without settling, so a form will guess and will sometimes be wrong.
