The story of Brison
Saint Brice succeeded Martin of Tours as bishop in 397 and was, by the accounts that survive, a difficult man; his cult nonetheless spread, and Brice became a name in France and then in Britain. The surname Bryson developed in Scotland and the north of England as an ordinary patronymic. Its American career as a given name is recent and steep: Bryson entered the top thousand in the 1970s, the top two hundred in the 2000s, and the top hundred in the 2010s. Brison belongs to the respelling wave that follows any such rise, and it uses the plainest device available — one vowel changed, everything else the same.
Meaningscholars disagree
son of Brice
Bryson is a patronymic from Brice, so the meaning depends on Brice, and that is where it stops. Brice comes from the Gaulish name Bricius, borne by a fifth-century bishop of Tours, and Gaulish is poorly enough attested that the name has never been securely explained. Proposals connect it to a word for speckled or for swift, but none is demonstrated. The patronymic half is certain and the personal-name half is not.

Spellings are grouped by a fixed rule that folds interchangeable English spellings of one sound (ck/k, ph/f, x/ks, a non-initial y for i) and keeps vowels apart, so Sean and Shawn stay separate names. It errs towards splitting: a family here is never larger than the truth. SSA national data, 2025. Method

Every popular name lives one long story — a climb, a peak, a slow settling back. - Read cold, the i can produce a short vowel rather than a long one.
- The Gaulish name at the root has no established meaning.
