The Brie region's name is Gaulish and probably means muddy — which is unromantic for a place whose cheese is one of the most famous in the world, but that is generally how place names go: they describe the ground rather than what came later. American naming almost certainly reached Brie by clipping Brianna or Gabrielle instead. The cheese has protected status and the Gaulish mud is still under it.
