The story of Genevie
Geneviève was born near Paris around 419 and became the city's most important saint; the tradition holds that in 451 she persuaded the Parisians to stay and pray rather than flee before Attila's advance, and the Huns went south instead. Her shrine was the center of Parisian devotion for a thousand years. The name has been continuously French, and English took Genevieve in the nineteenth century. Its American peak came in the 1910s and 1920s, and Genevie appears as a shortened American spelling in the same period, peaking in 1923 — the era's taste was for the long form, and this is its trimmed sibling.
Meaningnot established
Not established
The name's origin is genuinely unsettled. Geneviève comes through Latin Genovefa, which is generally taken to be Germanic or Celtic; proposed elements include a word for a tribe or family and one for a woman, giving something like woman of the people, and a Celtic derivation has also been argued. None is established. Genevie is an American shortening with no separate history.

The Maysel test
Every popular name lives one long story — a climb, a peak, a slow settling back. Genevie's later chapters haven't been written yet, so we borrowed them: Maysel climbed just as high around 1908, and its whole arc is on record. Line the two peaks up, and Maysel's path sketches the road Genevie is walking now.
