A large part of the Spanish name stock is Germanic. Alfonso, Fernando, Rodrigo, Ramiro, Elvira, Gonzalo and Bermudo are all Visigothic, left behind by a ruling class that governed Iberia for three centuries and then vanished as a separate people, leaving its names behind in the language it had abandoned.

The story of Brianda
The Visigoths ruled Spain from the fifth century to the Arab conquest in 711, adopted Latin, converted from Arianism to Catholicism, and were absorbed into the Hispano-Roman population entirely. What survived was the aristocracy's names, which became prestigious and spread through the whole population during the medieval period. Alfonso is from Germanic elements meaning noble and ready; Fernando is journey and brave; Rodrigo is fame and power; Elvira is probably from elements meaning all and true; Gonzalo contains a war element. By the eleventh century these were the standard names of Christian Iberia and they remain among the most used Spanish names today. Anyone assuming that a Spanish name must be Latin, Arabic or biblical is missing a whole layer, and Brianda may belong to it.

Not established
Brianda appears in medieval Iberian records and its origin is not established. A Germanic derivation has been proposed, which would place it with the substantial Visigothic layer in Spanish and Portuguese naming, and a connection to Brian has also been suggested. Neither is documented. The name is used in Mexico and Spain and peaks in the American data in 1992.

The Bernardine test
Every popular name lives one long story — a climb, a peak, a slow settling back. Brianda's later chapters haven't been written yet, so we borrowed them: Bernardine climbed just as high around 1931, and its whole arc is on record. Line the two peaks up, and Bernardine's path sketches the road Brianda is walking now.
Brianda sits in the calm middle of the cycle — neither chasing a wave nor sliding off one. Middle-of-the-cycle names age slowly and predictably.
