Brevin
Masculine
Saint Kevin held his hand out of a window while praying and a blackbird nested in it. He kept it there until the eggs hatched. The name behind that story, Caoimhin, is the -evin at the end of Kevin, Devin and Nevin — and Brevin is built in the same frame without an Irish word behind it.

The story of Brevin
The -evin ending is Irish three times over: Kevin is Caoimhin, from a word for gentle or comely; Devin is from an Irish surname; Nevin is from another. Those three were common enough in twentieth-century America to establish the shape, and Brevin, Trevin and Zevin followed without any Irish word behind them. That is worth stating plainly rather than inventing an etymology: the name is built on an Irish template and is not Irish, which is a perfectly ordinary way for names to be made and has been for centuries. Kevin's blackbird, meanwhile, is one of the better saints' stories, and Glendalough, where he lived, is still there.

Not established
No source has been established. Brevin is a modern American formation on the pattern of Kevin, Devin and Nevin, all of which are genuinely Irish. Latin brevis, short, is sometimes offered and there is no evidence for it. The name is honestly described as new.

The Raynaldo test
Every popular name lives one long story — a climb, a peak, a slow settling back. Brevin's later chapters haven't been written yet, so we borrowed them: Raynaldo climbed just as high around 1955, and its whole arc is on record. Line the two peaks up, and Raynaldo's path sketches the road Brevin is walking now.
Brevin sits in the calm middle of the cycle — neither chasing a wave nor sliding off one. Middle-of-the-cycle names age slowly and predictably.
