The story of Bret
Breton contingents fought with the Normans in 1066 and settled in England afterwards, and English neighbors identified them by where they came from — which is how Bret and Brett became surnames. The surname crossed into given-name use in nineteenth-century America, and the writer Bret Harte, whose stories of the California gold rush were read internationally in the 1870s, gave the single-t spelling particular visibility. It peaked in America in the mid-1970s.
