The story of Batya
The rabbinic tradition takes a name from a genealogy in Chronicles — Bithiah, daughter of Pharaoh — and identifies her with the princess at the river, then explains the name as God's acknowledgment: because she treated Moses as a son, God called her a daughter. It is one of the more generous readings in the midrash. The name is used in observant Jewish communities and reaches American records from them.
