Azelia sits between two real names without being quite either. Azalea is the flower, from a Greek word for dry, since the shrub was thought to like poor soil. Azelie is French, an old diminutive from the Adelaide family. Azelia is the spelling that lands between them, and American families use it for both reasons.

Where it comes from

The story of Azelia

Botanists named the azalea in the eighteenth century from a Greek adjective meaning dry, and English-speaking families began using flower names for daughters a century later, which brought Azalea into use alongside Iris, Ivy and Violet. Quite separately, French families had Azelie, a nineteenth-century diminutive within the large Adelaide family, and it traveled to Quebec and Louisiana with French speakers. Azelia is where the two arrive at the same spelling, and American use draws on both without distinguishing them.

Meaningscholars disagree

the azalea flower, or a French form of the noble Adelaide names

Two accounts. Greek azaleos, dry, gave the botanists the shrub's name, and Azalea is a flower name in the ordinary Victorian manner. The French Azelie is a diminutive within the Adelaide and Adelaide-related family, from Germanic adal, noble. Azelia is used for either, and no source settles which it belongs to.

Spellings are grouped by a fixed rule that folds interchangeable English spellings of one sound (ck/k, ph/f, x/ks, a non-initial y for i) and keeps vowels apart, so Sean and Shawn stay separate names. It errs towards splitting: a family here is never larger than the truth. SSA national data, 2025. Method

The trade-off

Practical strengths
  • It has two documented histories to choose between, one botanical and one French.
  • Zia and Lia are ready short forms, both of them names in their own right.
  • The z gives it a distinctive look without making it hard to read.
What to consider
  • Azalea, Azelie and Azelia are all close enough to be substituted in writing.
  • Two pronunciations circulate and the spelling settles neither.
  • Its meaning depends on which of the two histories a family claims, so it will need explaining.
