Where it comes from

The story of Azan

The adhan has been called since the first years of Islam, and the tradition holds that its wording came to a companion of the Prophet in a dream. The word is the same everywhere the religion is practiced, and the sound of it is one of the most immediately recognizable in the world. Its use as a personal name is chiefly South Asian and relatively recent, and Urdu spells it Azan because Urdu pronounces the Arabic letter as a z.

Meaning

the call to prayer

From Arabic adhan, built on a root meaning to listen or to give ear; the word names the formal announcement that prayer is due, distinct from the shorter call given inside the mosque.

Azan sits in the rare tail. Its best year on record was 2022, with 41 boys. Today it is given to few enough children that it does not enter the ranked charts at all.

Spellings are grouped by a fixed rule that folds interchangeable English spellings of one sound (ck/k, ph/f, x/ks, a non-initial y for i) and keeps vowels apart, so Sean and Shawn stay separate names. It errs towards splitting: a family here is never larger than the truth. SSA national data, 2025. Method

The trade-off

Practical strengths
  • A settled meaning tied to something a great many people hear every day.
  • Four letters and two syllables, easy to write and to say.
  • Recognized instantly across the whole Muslim world.
What to consider
  • Azaan and Adhan are both used and relatives may prefer a different spelling.
  • The stress moves to the front in English, which flattens the name.
  • It is very clearly marked as a Muslim name, which is a fact to know rather than a problem.
