Where it comes from

The story of Ayelen

The Mapuche resisted Spanish and then Chilean and Argentine conquest for longer than almost any other people in the Americas, and their language survived with them. Argentine and Chilean families began giving Mapuche names in quantity in the later twentieth century, as an act of recognition — Ayelen, Nahuel, Rayen and Lihuen are now entirely ordinary in Argentina. The practice parallels the Mexican turn toward Nahuatl names. Ayelen reaches United States records with Argentine and Chilean families.

Meaning

joy; laughter

Mapudungun ayün covers loving, liking and laughing, and Ayelen is generally read as joy or a smile — 'she who is joy' in some accounts. The reading is documented within Mapudungun naming, though the exact grammatical form is described differently by different sources. The word itself and the sense of joy are not in dispute.

The trade-off

Practical strengths
  • A documented meaning in a living indigenous language, which very few names in American records can claim.
  • Every sound is easy in Spanish and manageable in English.
  • Entirely ordinary in Argentina rather than exotic there.
What to consider
  • The accent is usually dropped in American records, which moves the stress.
  • English speakers stress the first syllable, which is not the Mapudungun or Spanish saying.
  • Ayelen, Ayelén and Ayelin all circulate and none is standard here.
