Where it comes from

Our story of Addalynn

Our story of Addalynn is about a name with two mothers. Ada arrived in English from two directions at once — out of the Germanic adal names that Norman settlers brought, and out of the Hebrew Adah that Reformation reading put into circulation — and by the nineteenth century nobody was distinguishing them. Both mean something good: noble on one side, an ornament on the other. A name in that position does not have to choose, and Addalynn inherits the whole tangle along with a modern ending that means nothing at all. Two genuine ancestries and one invented suffix is a fair description of a great many current names.

Meaningnot established

Not established

Ada may be a short form of Germanic names built on adal, 'noble' — Adelaide, Adelheid — or it may descend from Hebrew Adah, which appears in Genesis and means an ornament or adornment. Both are documented and both have contributed. The -lynn ending is Welsh llyn, 'lake', through the English Lynn, working here as a suffix. The compound has no recorded meaning of its own.

Spellings are grouped by a fixed rule that folds interchangeable English spellings of one sound (ck/k, ph/f, x/ks, a non-initial y for i) and keeps vowels apart, so Sean and Shawn stay separate names. The trade-off

Practical strengths
  • Addie, Ada and Lynn are three ready short forms, all of them established names.
  • Every sound in it is easy in English, so it is said correctly on sight.
  • Three syllables with a light ending, which pairs well with most surnames.
What to consider
  • Addalynn, Adalyn, Adalynn and Addalyn are all in use and none is standard.
  • The doubled d and doubled n are both optional and both get dropped in writing.
  • It is tied closely to one stretch of American naming, which will be audible later.
