Where it comes from

Our story of Ellora

Our story of Ellora goes to the caves, because they deserve it. Thirty-four temples were cut into a basalt escarpment in Maharashtra between the sixth and tenth centuries — Buddhist, Hindu and Jain, side by side — and the largest, Kailasa, was carved downward out of the living rock in a single piece, several stories high, with nothing assembled and nothing joined. It is one of the most extraordinary things anybody has made. Whether this name has any connection to the place is very doubtful; it is far more likely a form of Eleanor. But the place is worth knowing about either way.

Meaningnot established

Not established

The Indian place-name Ellora, properly Verul, has no settled derivation. Eleanor, the far likelier source for the American name, has never had its meaning established either — it comes through Old French Alienor from a Provençal name of uncertain root, and the familiar gloss 'light' is a later reinterpretation. So both candidate roads end in the same place: nothing recorded.

Pronouncing Ellora

eh-LOR-ah

Three syllables with the stress in the middle. The Indian place-name is said much the same way. American English reduces the final vowel to a schwa.

Ellora sits in the rare tail. Its best year on record was 2023, with 66 girls. Today it is given to few enough children that it does not enter the ranked charts at all.

Rank is a position, a count is a headcount, and they move independently — a name can hold its rank while the number of babies behind it falls. Source: U.S. Social Security Administration.

#332
counting every spelling

The SSA counts spellings, not names. Ellora went to 52 girls in 2025, but Elora and Elorah are the same name said out loud. Together the 3 spellings went to 935, which makes it the 332nd most-given girls’ name of the year — 2,768 places above the chart.

About 1 girl in 1,719 born in 2025 was given one of these spellings — against 1 in 30,909 for Ellora itself.

Spellings are grouped by a fixed rule that folds interchangeable English spellings of one sound (ck/k, ph/f, x/ks, a non-initial y for i) and keeps vowels apart, so Sean and Shawn stay separate names. It errs towards splitting: a family here is never larger than the truth. SSA national data, 2025. Method

The trade-off

Practical strengths
  • Ella, Ellie and Lora are three ready short forms, all of them established names.
  • Every sound in it is easy in English, so it is said correctly on sight.
  • Three syllables with a light ending, which pairs well with most surnames.
What to consider
  • Its origin is unsettled on both of its possible roads.
  • Ellora, Elora, Eleanora and Elenora all circulate and none is standard.
  • It sits very close to Eleanor and will be assumed to be a form of it.
