Where it comes from

The story of Lainie

Elaine appears in the French Arthurian romances and in Malory, most memorably as the Fair Maid of Astolat, who dies of unrequited love and is floated down the river to Camelot — Tennyson retold it as the Lady of Shalott and made it a Victorian favorite. The name entered English use from there. Lainie is its American short form and appears in the record in the middle of the twentieth century, often as a full given name rather than a shortening.

Meaningnot established

Not established

Elaine is the Old French form of Helen, and Helen's meaning has never been settled — a connection to a word for a torch is the most commonly offered and is not secure. Lainie also functions as a short form of Lane and of Alaina. So the name is a diminutive of a name whose own meaning is not established, which is a common position for the older stock.

counting every spelling

The SSA counts spellings, not names. Lainie went to 52 girls in 2025, but Laynie is the same name said out loud. Together the 2 spellings went to 224, which makes it the 738th most-given girls’ name of the year — 2,362 places above the chart.

About 1 girl in 7,175 born in 2025 was given one of these spellings — against 1 in 30,909 for Lainie itself.

Spellings are grouped by a fixed rule that folds interchangeable English spellings of one sound (ck/k, ph/f, x/ks, a non-initial y for i) and keeps vowels apart, so Sean and Shawn stay separate names. It errs towards splitting: a family here is never larger than the truth. SSA national data, 2025. Method

The trade-off

Practical strengths
  • Elaine stands behind it as a full formal name whenever one is wanted.
  • Two easy syllables that every English speaker says correctly at first sight.
  • Lane is a ready shorter form and a complete name of its own.
What to consider
  • Lainie, Lanie, Laney and Lainey are all in use and none is standard.
  • It is a diminutive by construction and reads as informal on official documents.
  • It carries a strong mid-twentieth-century American flavor.
