Adalynn
Feminine · Germanic roots · “from the Germanic element adal”
Adalynn is the newest coat of paint on a very old name: the Germanic word for "noble" that gave medieval Europe Adela, Adèle and Adeline. The American ear added the -lynn ending it likes so much, and the result keeps the soft three-beat sway of Adeline while spelling itself out the way it sounds. Whatever the spelling, it still shortens to Addie, as it has for generations.
How old is the name Adalynn?

The story of Adalynn
The root is Germanic: adal, "noble," a favorite building block in early medieval names, which stood alone as Adela and Adele. Norman French turned Adele into the diminutive Adeline, and that form crossed to England after the Conquest and stayed, dipping and reviving through the centuries. Adalynn is the American respelling of that same name, remade with the -lynn ending that English-speaking parents began attaching to everything in the twentieth century. So the name is at once brand new on paper and about as old as recorded European names get.
Meaning
from the Germanic element adal, "noble"
The meaning sits in the first half of the name, inherited through Adeline and Adele. The -lynn ending is a modern English name-building suffix rather than a word with a meaning of its own — it also produced Jaelynn, Braelynn and Katelynn.

Spellings are grouped by a fixed rule that folds interchangeable English spellings of one sound (ck/k, ph/f, x/ks, a non-initial y for i) and keeps vowels apart, so Sean and Shawn stay separate names. The Jenny test
Every popular name lives one long story — a climb, a peak, a slow settling back. Adalynn's later chapters haven't been written yet, so we borrowed them: Jenny climbed just as high around 1977, and its whole arc is on record. Line the two peaks up, and Jenny's path sketches the road Adalynn is walking now.
Adalynn sits in the calm middle of the cycle — neither chasing a wave nor sliding off one. Middle-of-the-cycle names age slowly and predictably.

The trade-off
- Reads correctly on sight for English speakers — no ambiguity about how to say it.
- Comes with Addie and Ada already in service, two short forms with long independent histories.
- The meaning "noble" is settled and traceable through Adeline and Adele, not a modern invention.
- Sits beside recognizable cousins in French, Italian and Spanish, so the family of names travels.
- The spelling field is crowded: Adalyn, Adalynn, Adelyn, Addilyn and Adaline all exist side by side. Expect to spell it out often, and expect to see it written back to you three other ways.
- The -lynn ending places the name firmly in a recent style wave, so it will read as of a particular moment in a way that Adeline or Adele do not.
- Its bearers are concentrated in one young generation, so an Adalynn will meet plenty of near-namesakes among children and almost none among adults.
