Kaylani
Feminine · “Usually read through Hawaiian lani”
Kaylani is a young name built from old material: the Hawaiian word lani, sky or heaven, which sits at the end of a whole family of names, joined to the sound of Kay. It moves the way its cousins Kailani and Kalani move — three light syllables with the weight in the middle, kay-LAH-nee. It arrived in American records within living memory and has been climbing steadily ever since.

The story of Kaylani
Lani is a real and well-attested Hawaiian word for sky or heaven, and it closes a long list of Hawaiian names — Leilani, Kailani, Kalani, Noelani among them. Kaylani belongs to a wave of American names formed on that ending, and it is genuinely hard to say whether any given family reached it by respelling Kailani or by extending Kayla. It surfaced in US records only in recent decades and has been rising since, which makes it a modern name resting on an old word rather than an old name newly rediscovered. Its strongest showing is in states with long-standing Pacific and Hispanic communities, where -lani names have been familiar the longest.

Usually read through Hawaiian lani, 'sky, heaven'
Two readings compete, and both are reasonable. One treats Kaylani as an English respelling of Hawaiian Kailani, from kai 'sea' and lani 'sky, heaven' — hence the popular gloss 'sea and sky'. The other treats it as an American coinage: the Kay- of Kayla and Kaylee joined to the familiar -lani ending, in which case only the second half carries a documented meaning. The lani element is solid either way; the first syllable is where the disagreement sits.

Spellings are grouped by a fixed rule that folds interchangeable English spellings of one sound (ck/k, ph/f, x/ks, a non-initial y for i) and keeps vowels apart, so Sean and Shawn stay separate names. The Janelle test
Every popular name lives one long story — a climb, a peak, a slow settling back. Kaylani's later chapters haven't been written yet, so we borrowed them: Janelle climbed just as high around 1978, and its whole arc is on record. Line the two peaks up, and Janelle's path sketches the road Kaylani is walking now.

The trade-off
- Three ready-made short forms — Kay, Lani, Kayla — each of which already stands alone as a name, so it shortens without sounding improvised.
- Reads phonetically for English speakers: nothing silent, nothing surprising, no letter doing an unusual job.
- The -lani ending is already familiar through Leilani, Kailani and Kalani, so the shape lands as recognizable even where the name itself is new.
- Still rising rather than fading, and rare enough that a classroom is unlikely to hold a second one.
- It sits inside a crowded spelling cluster — Kailani, Kalani, Kaylanie, Kaelani — so it will be spelled aloud fairly often, and mail will arrive addressed to the wrong version.
- Lani is a Hawaiian word, and some Hawaiian speakers feel strongly about -lani names used outside the culture. Worth knowing if the connection matters to you, either as heritage or as borrowing.
- Because the name is genuinely recent, nearly everyone carrying it is a child. There is no adult Kaylani in most people's memory to anchor it, which cuts both ways — no baggage, but also no precedent.
- The Kay- opening sits close to Kayla, Kaylee and Kayleigh, so mishearings within that family are common.
