Where it comes from

The story of Ayden

Áedán mac Gabráin was a sixth-century king of Dál Riata and Saint Aidan of Lindisfarne brought Christianity to Northumbria from Iona; the name was old and Irish long before it was American. Its modern rise is extraordinary: Aidan is scarcely in the American records before 1990, and by the mid-2000s the -aden family collectively outnumbered any single name in the country. Girls' use followed as it usually does with a very large boys' name, peaking in 2008 alongside the boys' own crest, and the whole family has declined together since.

Meaning

Little fire

From Irish Aodhán, a diminutive of Aodh, the name of a Celtic sun or fire god and the ordinary Old Irish word for fire. The reading is settled for Aidan. Ayden is one of a large set of American respellings — Aiden, Aidan, Ayden, Aden, Aaden — and the y carries no separate history.

counting every spelling

The SSA counts spellings, not names. Ayden went to 22 girls in 2025, but Aiden is the same name said out loud. Together the 2 spellings went to 49, which makes it the 911th most-given girls’ name of the year — 4,643 places above the chart.

About 1 girl in 32,801 born in 2025 was given one of these spellings — against 1 in 73,058 for Ayden itself.

Spellings are grouped by a fixed rule that folds interchangeable English spellings of one sound (ck/k, ph/f, x/ks, a non-initial y for i) and keeps vowels apart, so Sean and Shawn stay separate names. It errs towards splitting: a family here is never larger than the truth. SSA national data, 2025. Method
