Where it comes from

The story of Aiden

Aodh was so common in early Ireland that the annals are full of them, and the diminutive Aodhan belonged to a seventh-century monk of Iona who founded the monastery at Lindisfarne and converted much of northern England. The name went quiet for a thousand years, came back in Ireland in the twentieth century, and then became one of the most-given boys' names in the United States after 1995, taking a whole rhyme family with it. Its use for girls is recent and small.

Aiden sits in the rare tail. Its best year on record was 2007, with 176 girls. Today it is given to few enough children that it does not enter the ranked charts at all.

counting every spelling

The SSA counts spellings, not names. Aiden went to 27 girls in 2025, but Ayden is the same name said out loud. Together the 2 spellings went to 49, which makes it the 911th most-given girls’ name of the year — 3,967 places above the chart.

About 1 girl in 32,801 born in 2025 was given one of these spellings — against 1 in 59,528 for Aiden itself.

Spellings are grouped by a fixed rule that folds interchangeable English spellings of one sound (ck/k, ph/f, x/ks, a non-initial y for i) and keeps vowels apart, so Sean and Shawn stay separate names. It errs towards splitting: a family here is never larger than the truth. SSA national data, 2025. Method

The trade-off

Practical strengths
  • The meaning is one vivid element and is documented back to pre-Christian Ireland.
  • It is easy to say and to spell after one hearing.
  • It carries a documented seventh-century saint with a real place attached.
What to consider
  • The name goes overwhelmingly to boys, so a girl called Aiden will be filed wrongly often and corrected for years.
  • Aidan, Aiden and Ayden are all in heavy use, so the spelling will be asked for.
  • It was among the most-given boys' names for two decades, so the sound is everywhere.
