Avital
Feminine · “my father is dew”
Tal is dew, and in a country where rain falls for four months of the year and then stops, dew is the water that arrives anyway. Avital says my father is dew, and it is not a decorative image: it is the difference between a crop surviving the summer and not.

The story of Avital
Avital appears in the second book of Samuel as one of the wives of David and the mother of his son Shephatiah, listed among the children born at Hebron. The name then all but vanishes from use until the modern Hebrew revival, which mined the biblical text hard for names that had been sitting unread for two thousand years; a great many Israeli names of the twentieth century are recoveries of this kind. In Israel Avital is used for both sexes, more often for women. It reached United States records with American Jewish naming from the 1970s and had its best year in 1991.
Meaning
my father is dew
Hebrew Avital, from avi, my father, and tal, dew. Like many Hebrew names it is a complete clause rather than a word. Dew is a standing metaphor for sustenance and blessing throughout the Hebrew Bible, appearing in the blessing of Isaac and in Hosea, and the name draws on that sense rather than on anything ornamental.

The Tynia test
Every popular name lives one long story — a climb, a peak, a slow settling back. Avital's later chapters haven't been written yet, so we borrowed them: Tynia climbed just as high around 1963, and its whole arc is on record. Line the two peaks up, and Tynia's path sketches the road Avital is walking now.
Avital sits in the calm middle of the cycle — neither chasing a wave nor sliding off one. Middle-of-the-cycle names age slowly and predictably.

The trade-off
- A settled Hebrew meaning, and one that is a complete sentence rather than an adjective.
- Tali and Tal are both short, current and independently used in Israel.
- Biblical without being one of the handful of biblical names everyone already has.
- The stress belongs at the end and English speakers will move it.
- It is used for both sexes in Israel, which some American families will not expect.
- Outside Jewish communities it is unfamiliar and will always need explaining.
